1. Ecole Européenne de Luxembourg – LUXEMBOURG (coordination)
The European School Luxembourg is a public institution that offers a multilingual and multicultural education at the pre-primary, primary and secondary levels. The European School of Luxembourg was the first of the European Schools. It was founded in October 1953 on the initiative of officials of the European Coal and Steel Community, with the support of the Community’s institutions and the government of Luxembourg. In April 1957, it formally became the first of the European Schools. Today the school population consists now of around 2745 students, 1353 are in the secondary school, 1362 in the pre-primary and primary school, coming from different European origins. There are 165 teachers in the secondary school. The school is known for high standards in languages; the European Baccalaureate requires students to study many subjects in their second or third languages. Students also benefit from the international environment provided by the presence of nine linguistic sections : English, German, French, Dutch, Finish, Spanish, Polish, Portuguese, Swedish, and four other languages are thought as mother tongue (Bulgarian, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian). The school has established a Learning Support program to help students with learning difficulties in certain areas. Besides, a specific Language II support program provides help in second language learning (for one semester). Finally, the SEN (Special Educational Need) program aims to help students with more specific cognitive difficulties. This program is managed by a pedagogical board and requires sometimes the collaboration of external experts. The school carries on many projects to fight against different kind of exclusion situations and to develop intercultural activities: ESSS-Sciences Symposium, Printemps des Poètes, Scuola Sana, Action Sans Frontières, Peer Mediation, the Counselling Team. The team involved in the project, composed form 15 teachers of five different sections, of three IT specialists and a photograph team will develop and encourage the intercultural awearness in the didactical and pedagogical fields.The European School Luxembourg 1 will work as coordinator of the project, working together with all the partner schools; the school already organised a preparatory visit from the 29.11.12 to the 02.12.12 for this project and will also be responsible for the official website and the photo-blog of the project.
2. Bundesgymnasium und Realgymnasium Wien – AUSTRIA
The « BUNDESGYMNASIUM und BUNDESREALGYMNASIUM Wien 21 » is a secondary school for pupils aged from 10 to 18 years. It is situated in the 21st district of vienna, close to the river Danube.
Our school was founded in 1900 and was the first public grammar school in Floridsdorf. Curently 907 students attend school and are coached by 95 teachers. Students in our school can choose between « Gymnasium » (with French, Latin or Ancient Greek) or « Realgymnasium » (with additional courses in Mathematica and Geometry).
We are known for high standards in IT and Sports (esp. Swimming, Volleyball and Basketball). We also set a focus on business, career planning and social projects. We cooperate with the University of Vienna and « Fachhochschule Technikum Wien ».
A lot of our pupils have a multicultural background and we benefit from the influence of these different cultures. We also have a long tradition in international partnerships. Our partners are (were) situated in France, Bosnia-Hercegovina and the Ukraine. We also arrange language-trips to GB, Malta and France.
It is very important for us, to get involved in European projects and stay in contact with schools all over Europe. This may help our pupils to become more open-minded and it will be easier to prevent prejudices.Role in the project: Austria will lead the evaluation process: production of evaluation forms, organisation of the different aspects of the evaluation and its valorisation during the whole project.
3. Agrupamento de Escolas Viseu Norte: Escola Básica D. Duarte, Vil de Soito, Viseu – PORTUGAL
The « Escola Básica D.Duarte » is a small school for pupils aged from 10 to 15. It is situated near Viseu, in the centre of Portugal. Since last year we are part of the » Agrupamento de Escolas de Viseu Norte », a set of schools formed by several Primary Schools and two Secondary Schools (ours and the Escola Básica Azeredo Perdigão ». 1800 students attend this « grouping » of schools.
Our school was founded in 1988 and hosts 700 students (from 5 to 15 years ) and 80 teachers. It’s set in a rural zone of the region, despite being situated 6 kms from the city. This feature is important to understand the nature of our students and all the problems that come from such a social, economical and family background: many parents are unemployed and have a low academical and instruction level, thus not being able to provide the necessary attention to their chidren’s school life and needs.
These last few years, our school has participated in some international and national projects, involving mainly science and technology.Role in the project: Portugal will lead the E-Twinning page of the teachers and pupils, the sharing of informations and pupils productions, and organisation of the video conferences.
4. Scoala Gimnaziala « I. GH. DUCA » Rm. Valcea – ROMANIA
The school is situated in the central-south area of Romania. There are about 640 children in our institution. Half of them learn in primary school and the others in secondary school. The students came from families with low funds, they have special needs (materials, impossibility to travel abroad). There are few possibilities of getting a job for children’s parents. Our school organized mathematic contests named « Pitagora ». It is known as a national contest where participate about 450 children from the hole country and a lot of great universitary teachers are involved. Our students participate in a big number of sports competitions organized either by our country or by others. Our institution helps every child to socialize and take part in activities. Also, our children, ambitious and passionate participate at various English contest, as Mac Millan and won deferent prices.
Extracurricular activities complement the training and education content and are organized according to students’ interests, having a positive influence on children’s development and scientific content, cultural, artistic, humanitarian, ecological, moral, civic, technical and applie. On the other hand the regional economy, the level of unemployment in our region is low, a fact which brings influence upon the life of the school students. School’s educational offer is generous and carefully designed so that the instructive – education is student-centered and respect the particularities of age, interests and abilities of pupils. We hope that we will have the opportunity to learn more details about the educational systems and the pedagogical methods of each partner school. Also, we want to help students overcome barriers of time and space and to realize the importance of communication and to improve their skills.Role in the project: Romania will lead the work program regarding the dissemination strategies.
